What Actually Wrecks a Front Door in Georgia?

Sun and water, in that order, and the finish goes first. The biggest factor is not what the door is made of. It is how much overhang sits above it and which way it faces. Wood door manufacturers put this in writing, and a door hung without the required overhang may not be covered at all.

The question people ask is fiberglass or wood.

That is the wrong first question.

Take two identical doors. Put one under eight feet of covered porch and hang the other on a bare wall facing west. They will not have the same life. Not close. The sheltered one outlasts the other regardless of what either is made of.

This is not an opinion. Wood door manufacturers write it into their warranties, and a door installed without enough overhang may not be covered when it fails.

So before you pick a material, look up.

Here is what actually damages a door in this climate, what your warranty already says about it, and how the materials compare once you know what the door is up against.

What actually wrecks an exterior door?

Two things, and the order matters.

Heat. A door face in direct sun runs far hotter than the air around it. Manufacturers publish surface temperatures for exposed doors well past 120 degrees. At that point the finish starts breaking down, and once the finish is gone the material underneath has nothing protecting it.

Water. Rain on the face, and splashback coming up off a stoop into the bottom rail. Wood takes it in, swells, dries, and does it again. Joints open. Panels move.

The sequence is usually the same. The finish fails first. Then the door itself takes the damage. By the time anybody notices, the repair is bigger than a coat of anything.

Why does the overhang matter more than the material?

Because the overhang decides how much of both the door ever sees.

A door with real cover takes almost no direct sun and almost no driving rain. A door on a bare wall takes all of it, every day, for as long as the house stands.

There is a rule of thumb the industry runs on. Measure from the bottom of the door up to the underside of the overhang. The overhang should then project out at least half that distance. Ten feet up means roughly five feet out.

Stand at your front door and look up. That measurement is the one that matters.

Some manufacturers go further on south-facing entries, where sun is on the door most of the day, and ask for an overhang matching the full height rather than half of it.

What does your door’s warranty already say?

Go read it. This is the most useful ten minutes in the entire decision.

Wood door warranties commonly state that the door is not covered if it is installed without the required overhang. Not reduced coverage. Not covered.

Several go further and exclude specific combinations by name. A dark finish on a south-facing door turns up on exclusion lists.

Think about what that document actually is. The manufacturer has already worked out which installations fail, and they wrote it down because they did not want to pay for those failures. It is free advice from the only party holding the claims data.

Read yours before you choose the door, not after it shows up.

Does the color matter?

Yes, and more than the brochure lets on.

Light colors reflect heat. Dark colors absorb it. A dark door on an exposed wall runs hotter than a light one in the same spot, and heat is what takes the finish apart.

There is a test for this that manufacturers publish, and it needs no tools. On a hot afternoon, put your hand flat on the door face. If you cannot leave it there for thirty seconds, the door is too hot.

Worth doing on your existing door before you replace it. It tells you what the new one is walking into.

None of this means you cannot have a dark door. It means a dark door on an exposed south or west wall is the hardest combination available, and it should be a decision instead of an accident.

Should you put a storm door on it?

On a sunny wall, usually not, and this one catches people off guard.

A storm door traps a pocket of air against the face of the entry door. In this climate, in sun, that space gets very hot. Manufacturers publish temperatures behind storm doors that run far above what an exposed door face reaches on its own.

Heat like that produces the exact damage the storm door was supposed to prevent. Warping. Color fading. Joints separating. A dark door underneath makes it worse.

If there is a real reason to have one, vented versions exist for this problem. On a hot wall with a dark door behind it, a solid storm door is a poor trade.

So how do the materials compare?

Once the exposure is known, this part gets simpler.

Wood looks the best and asks the most. It moves with heat and moisture, and the finish is a wear layer that needs renewing. Even a properly sheltered door needs refinishing every few years. Under good cover, wood is a fine choice for the life of the house. On a bare west wall, it is a maintenance commitment somebody has to actually keep.

Fiberglass is the stable one. It does not rot, it handles moisture without much movement, and it can be made to read convincingly as wood. It is the practical answer for an exposed entry, and it is why plenty of good houses have fiberglass front doors nobody ever clocks.

Steel is economical and dents permanently. More common on secondary entries than on a custom front door.

Iron brings a different set of questions. Weight, hardware, and glass are most of the conversation. Thermal behavior and condensation are worth asking about for the specific unit.

Exposure first. Material second.

Those three facts narrow the choice faster than any brochure. Bring them, plus a photo of the entry taken in the afternoon when the sun is on it.
