Solid core is the upgrade you feel every day, and it does not belong on every door. Put it where people sleep, work, or close a bathroom door. Skip it on closets, which are usually a large share of the door count. And height changes a room more than panel style does.
An interior door gets chosen twice. Once for how it looks, and once for what is inside it.
The second decision is the one you live with for twenty years, and it usually gets made by whoever is trying to hit a number.
A hollow core door tells you what it is the first time you close it. Light in the hand, loud against the stop, and it passes sound like it is barely there. A solid core door does none of that.
The upgrade is real.
What is not true is that you need it everywhere.
Here is where the money earns its keep, where it does not, and the one decision that changes a room more than any of it.
What actually changes when you go solid core?
Three things, and you notice all of them without being told.
Weight. A solid core door has mass. It swings with some authority and stops where you put it. The difference registers the first time you touch one.
Sound. It closes with a low sound instead of a hollow knock, and it blocks a good deal more of whatever is happening on the other side.
Durability. A hollow core door is a skin over a light grid with air behind most of it. A knee, a doorknob, a piece of furniture moving through a hallway, and it punches through. A solid core door takes the hit and stays a door.
The difference is what fills the middle. Hollow core is mostly air. Solid core is a solid engineered core, which also moves less across seasons than solid wood does.
Which doors need it, and which do not?
This is the entire question, and the answer is a list rather than a rule.
Worth it:
- The primary bedroom
- Every bathroom, including the powder room off the living area, where the whole house hears everything
- A home office, if the plan has one
- Laundry and mechanical rooms
- Media rooms
- Any door between a common space and a room where somebody sleeps or works
Not worth it:
- Closets. Reach-in, linen, pantry, all of them
- Doors that spend their life in the open position
- A door between two rooms used the same way
Closets are where the savings actually live. Take your plan and count how many doors open into one. On a custom home that number tends to run high, and nobody has ever once noticed the weight of a linen closet door.
That is the honest version of this decision. Solid core on the doors doing work. Hollow core where a door is a lid on a hole in the wall.
Does door height matter more than door style?
Usually, and it gets the least thought of anything on this page.
Standard interior doors run six feet eight. Taller doors, commonly eight foot, change the proportion of a room in a way no panel profile can touch. The room reads taller. The casing gets room to work. Moving between spaces stops feeling like passing through a hole in a wall.
It is not a free swap. Taller doors mean taller jambs, more casing, and wall heights and headers that have to accommodate them. That makes it an early decision, not a late one.
If the budget forces a choice between eight foot doors and a more elaborate panel, the height generally does more for the house.
One thing to hold steady while you decide. Whatever panel style you land on, keep it consistent through the house. Doors are the one element repeated in every room, so a change between floors or wings reads as a mistake rather than a choice. The place to vary is the front door and maybe a pair of statement doors off an entry. Everything behind that should agree with itself.
Prehung or slab?
For new construction, prehung almost every time. The door arrives hung in its jamb with the hinges already mortised, which is faster and more consistent than building it up on site.
For a remodel it is a real question, and it is where people get burned.
Replacing a slab in an existing jamb works only if the jamb is square, the hinge locations match, and the bore lines up. Old jambs are frequently none of those. A slab that looked cheaper turns into a day of fitting, and the door still hangs a little off when it is done.
Measure the opening and check the hinge and bore locations before deciding the slab is the cheaper path.
Will a solid core door make the room quiet?
Quieter. Not quiet.
The door is one part of an assembly. Sound also moves through the gaps around it, and the largest one is usually the undercut at the bottom, which is often there on purpose for airflow.
So a solid core door on a home office is a real improvement, and it is not a recording booth. If sound genuinely matters in a room, the conversation has to include the gaps, the wall, and sometimes the HVAC, and it belongs with your builder before framing rather than with a door order after.
Worth knowing exactly what you are buying. A better door is a better door. It is not a solved problem.
Where does hardware fit in the budget?
Higher than it usually sits.
Hardware is the part of the door your hand is on every single day. A well-made lever on an average door feels better than builder-grade hardware on an expensive one. That is not an argument for cheap doors. It is an argument against spending the entire budget above the knob.
Heavier doors also want heavier hinges, and sometimes more of them. That gets specified along with the door, so the hardware decision is worth roughing in before the doors are ordered instead of after they arrive.
